Mmamba Kakoboza etched its name into Buganda sporting history after clinching its first-ever Airtel BIKA Tournament title with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Nkima Clan following a goalless draw in the final at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
A capacity crowd of Buganda Kingdom faithful witnessed an unforgettable finale that brought the curtain down on one of the most competitive editions of the historic inter-clan tournament.
Both finalists navigated a challenging knockout path to reach the grand stage. Nkima, champions in 2018, displayed remarkable resilience throughout the tournament.
They secured a place in the semi-finals after defeating Mutima Musagi 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw, with Ivan Junior Katumba and Sudaise Mutale finding the back of the net. In the semi-final, Nkima edged Ngo Clan 1-0 thanks to a decisive strike from Katumba.
Mmamba Kakoboza’s journey was equally dramatic. They progressed from the quarter-finals after an own goal by Lineker Buyondo settled their tie against Kasimba. In the semi-finals, Samuel Nsubuga’s solitary goal was enough to eliminate Kkobe 1-0 and book a place in the championship match.
The tournament saw clans battle through several elimination rounds before the final 16 teams were grouped into four pools, from which the quarter-finalists emerged. Both finalists secured their places in the title showdown through narrow semi-final victories, with Nkima overcoming Ngo and Mmamba Kakoboza defeating Kkobe by identical 1-0 scorelines.
The final itself was a tense and tightly contested affair, with neither side able to shake the net in 90 minutes. The match went into penalties, where Mmamba Kakoboza goalkeeper Mathias Kigoonya saved two Nkima spot-kicks. Despite striking the bar with his own penalty attempt, Kigoonya’s saves decided Mmamba Kakoboza 4-3 triumph to lift the trophy that came with Shs9 million cash prize.
Nkima finished as runners-up and received Shs7 million. In the third-place playoff, Kkobe defeated Ngo 1-0 courtesy of a Samuel Kawuma goal to secure bronze and a cash prize of Shs3 million.
Individual honors also highlighted the tournament’s outstanding performers. Nelson Senkatuka of Mbogo Clan won the Golden Boot after scoring six goals, while Nicholas Kabonge of Mmamba Kakoboza was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
In the netball competition, Nte Clan emerged champions after defeating Mmamba in the final.
Speaking after the match, Airtel Uganda Head of Public Relations David Birungi congratulated the champions on ending a 50-year wait for the title and reaffirmed Airtel’s commitment to supporting the tournament.

This year’s BIKA Tournament has once again demonstrated the power of sport to unite communities, celebrate culture, and nurture talent. Airtel is proud to be part of this incredible journey and to contribute to Buganda’s rich heritage through sports,” Birungi said.
The Airtel BIKA Tournament, which brought together more than 52 clans, including 40 football teams and 26 netball teams, has evolved into a flagship cultural and sporting event that celebrates identity, heritage, and community engagement.
Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga commended the sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament and encouraged young people to embrace sports as a constructive path toward personal development.
“The BIKA Tournament is a vessel of our heritage, unity, and discipline. I congratulate Mmamba Kakoboza Clan on their victory and applaud all the participating clans for keeping our traditions alive. I urge the youth to take part in sports and steer clear of negative habits such as drug abuse and idleness. They must be intentional about building their future. Together with Airtel Uganda, we celebrate not just a winning team, but a winning culture.”
The 2026 edition featured clan teams competing in football, netball, chess, scrabble in Luganda, omweso, ludo, and other disciplines. The tournament kicked off on May 2, 2026, at Wankulukuku, where Mmamba Namakaka defeated Ngeye 1-0 in the opening match, setting the tone for a highly competitive month of clan sports.
The BIKA Sports Tournament has been a cornerstone of Buganda Kingdom culture since 1950. Played exclusively by Buganda’s clans, Uganda’s oldest football competition was established to foster unity, promote talent development, and provide entertainment for the Kabaka’s subjects.
