Lavagne Explains Manzoki Absence, Hints At Champions League Return

    David GOMBE

Vipers SC head coach Denis Lavagne has revealed why Congolese striker Cesar Manzoki is yet to feature for the side since his return.

The Frenchman however confirmed that Manzoki could play for the eight-time league champions in their CAF Champions League preliminary round match against Mauritanian side FC Nouadhibou at Kitende.

“On Saturday, he could play a part and help the team, but he’s not ready to start,” Lavagne said.

The forward was not involved in Vipers’ Super Cup triumph over Kitara FC last month and defeat to Entebbe UPPC last week.

“Manzoki arrived when the fitness was low, had so many injuries last season, didn’t play a lot, but step by step, he’s getting there,” Lavagne explained.

He returned to Kitende for a second stint having been at the club during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

In his first stint at Vipers, Manzoki made 46 league appearances, scoring 26 goals and providing 13 assists for the club.

During the 2020/21 season, he was the top scorer in the Uganda Cup with 7 goals and also clinched the UPL golden boot in the 2021/22 season with 18 goals, helping the Kitende based side to the league title that season.

Manzoki has also previously featured for AS Dauphins Noirs, AS Maniema Union, AS Vita Club, Dalian Pro, Hatta Club, Mohammedan Sporting club and most recently Eastern District FC in Hong Kong.

Vipers will be counting on Manzoki’s experience as they seek to navigate past Nouadhibou and advance in the continental competition.
