Former Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Arnold Okwi has on Tuesday, 4th August confirmed his retirement from professional Football.
Okwi who had retired from international football in March last year, has now hang up his boots from football entirely and thanked his teammates and coaches whom he served with during his time on the pitch.
“After many unforgettable years on the pitch, the time has come for me to say goodbye to professional football. This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life because football has been more than just a career. It has been my passion, my purpose and a dream I have been blessed to live every single day.” Stated Okwi
At club level, Okwi has featured for SC Villa, Simba SC (Tanzania), Young Africans (Tanzania), SønderjyskE(Denmark), Étoile du Sahel(Tunisia), Al Ittihad (Egypt) and Rwanda’s Kiyovu.
He made his senior national team debut in 2009 and retired after making 95 appearances in the Uganda Cranes jersey, scoring 28 goals.
The forward featured at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations that was held in Egypt where he scored two goals against DR Congo and Zimbabwe.
In 2021,he was named Cranes captain following Denis Onyango’s retirement. His last appearence in the Cranes colours came in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.
