Construction of 20,000 seater Akii-Bua Stadium Ahead of Schedule- Minister Ogwang

State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has asserted that construction of the 20,000-seater capacity Akii-Bua Stadium is ahead of schedule.
Ogwang confirmed the latest development concerning works at the stadium on Tuesday morning via his social Media platforms.
“In company of my colleague Hon. Minister Sam Engola, Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, the Lira City Resident City Commissioner, the Lira District LC5 Chairperson, the Mayor of Lira City plus other City and District leaders, I inspected the ongoing construction of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium and Lira University Training Pitch in Lira City.”
“I am pleased to report that works at Akii-Bua are ahead of schedule with overall progress now at about 80%. The 20,000-seater facility is steadily taking shape including the main stadium, indoor arena, swimming pool, clubhouse, hostel, tennis, and training pitches.”
Ogwang said government is working closely with CAF to ensure that the facilities meet the required standards.
“I called upon private investors to take advantage of the opportunities in Lira by investing in quality 4 and 5-star hotels to supplement the sports infrastructure.”

Works on the 20,000-seat multi-sport complex began in January 2024 and are conducted by Egyptian firm SAMCO National Construction Company.
The stadium is named after Uganda’s legendary athelete John Akii-Bua, who is also the nation’s first Olympic gold medalist, following his 400-meter hurdles victory at the 1972 Munich Games.
It will feature an eight-lane athletics track, a main football pitch, a 2,000-seat indoor arena, outdoor courts, and parking space for up to 1,000 vehicles.
